Ed was originally licensed as KN9QXY, novice, with the help of the Madison East High School Radio Club (W9HIH) in January of 1959.  He upgraded to Technician Class, K9QXY  and General Class the following year.  In 1980 he upgraded to Advanced Class and Extra in 1981.  In 1989 he changed call to WI9L and then to N9MW in 1996.  He held a second class commercial radio license in 1981.

N9MW served several times as Field Day Chairman, assembled and edited "Feedline" and was a Board member, Vice President and finally  President in 1981 for FLARC.   He has been an ARRL member since the 1960's.  He was Dane County EC and RACES Officer for eight years from approximately 1975 to 1983 (exact dates unknown).  Ed held periodic memberships in MARA and CWRA, serving on the Board of CWRA.  He has provided DC-cluster nodes since the late 1980's including WI9L (in Jackson, WI), N9MW in Middleton, WI, W9RNF in North Freedom and W9BG at the UW.  He is a member of the Green Valley AZ Radio Club.  N9MW was President of MDXC in 1994 and 2002.

Ed graduated in 1961 from Madison East High School, attended two years at the UW-Madison (Physics) and later took several business oriented classes at the UW-Madison and UW-Washington County.  He was employed by Wisconsin Bell in 1963 and retired in 1994. This time included a six year assignment on staff implementing I&M mechanization from 1984 to 1991 when he resided in Jackson, WI.   He then was employed at Superior Electronics and Mid-West Associated (previously Satterfield Electronics) for several years during which he built his present residence in Blanchardville. 

He has achieved and maintained DXCC #1 and holds DXCC-CW and DXCC-Phone.  Presently he has worked DXCC on eight bands.  N9MW has hosted several multi-multi DX contest efforts.  He also likes building equipment, particularly antennas.
